H1N1 Update, October 29, 2009
Written by Stephen Law

Dear John Stark Parents:

We need your help!

As you know, there is a heightened awareness in our country and in our state about the H1N1 influenza (sometimes referred to as the "Swine Flu.")

Thus far, John Stark has been fortunate with a relatively small number of influenza cases.  We are bracing ourselves, however, for a projected increase in the number of cases in New Hampshire --- which will certainly affect our community's schools.

We are trying to track students who are absent from school with the flu or with flu-like symptoms.  If your student stays home from school due to illness, please share information with us (when you call in or when the front office staff calls you to verify an absence) about your student's flu-like symptoms.  The tell-tale symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, and sore throat.

We do ask that parents keep students home from school until they have been fever free (without using fever-reducing medicines like Tylenol, ibuprofen, or aspirin) for at least 24 hours.

We are passing the same message (to stay home) to all John Stark Faculty and Staff who are sick with a fever.

Our objective is to reduce transmission of the virus while at school.  Avoiding close contact with sick people is one key method of reducing transmission of the influenza virus (H1N1 or seasonal).

Other methods are based in common hygiene and include:

1.  Washing your hands (frequently) with plenty of hot water and soap.
2.  Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
3.  Avoiding sharing drinks, food, and eating utensils with others.

Thank you in advance for assisting the school to keep our students and staff members healthy!

Michael Turmelle,
Principal, John Stark Regional High School
